Healthy Gums for a Healthy You!

You take care of your teeth by brushing and flossing regularly, but have you ever considered how to best take care of your gums? Healthy gums play a vital role in your health and the look of your smile. Read on to learn more about gums, and how to best take care of them.

The Importance of Healthy Gums

You may have heard of gum disease, but are you aware of how much damage gum disease can actually do? Gum disease is an infection that can affect the teeth and surrounding tissues. Because it is not associated with pain, many people are not even aware that they have it. However, gum disease can cause many health issues, including loss of teeth.

Gum disease occurs when plaque is not removed with brushing and flossing. Some warning signs of gum disease may include bleeding gums, red or swollen gums, bad breath, loose teeth, or receding gums.

Tips to Prevent Gum Disease

Thankfully, there are some steps that you can take to prevent gum disease. Proper brushing and flossing are very important. After flossing your teeth, be sure to follow these steps when brushing: Hold your toothbrush at a 45-degree angle towards to gum line, use short, gently strokes when brushing, use the tip of your toothbrush to clean behind your top and bottom teeth, and don’t forget to brush your tongue!

As you can see, healthy gums are very important for a healthy and happy smile. If you have any questions regarding gum disease or gum health, contact our office today! We would be happy to answer any questions that you may have.
